Porsche kicked off the show with a hybrid version of its Cayenne S sports utility vehicle. Porsche's 911 GT3 RS hybrid race car uses a flywheel rather than batteries to store electricity. This allows the German racer to recover kinetic energy when braking, and quickly release it again to power the engine when necessary — or to give it an additional boost. Don't expect the GT3 to do the full 24 hours race on the Nuerburgring in May on electricity alone though. The flywheel will only spin so far before the 480 horsepower gasoline engine has to take over.

The 918 Spyder hybrid concept won't go far on batteries — a mere 16 miles — but it's hard to see how a Porsche driver would be satisfied driving electric for long anyway.
