Pipe breach causes sewage to flow into S.A. River

Express-News -

While working on the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River on Friday morning, Zachry Construction drilled into a 54-inch sewer main, causing more than 100,000 gallons of sewage to spill. But the San Antonio Water System said only about 300 to 500 gallons flowed into the river, while the rest of the untreated effluent was contained behind a hastily built earthen dam.

Crews will work through the weekend to install a bypass pipe for the SAWS sewer line and pump out the remaining sewage, SAWS said.

The river is now being monitored by the San Antonio River Authority and SAWS for impacts to fish and wildlife.

Otra Vez! If only SAWS were to participate in One Call. Zachry crews call 811 as required by law before they dig but nothing in the law requires them to make an additional call to SAWS to request water/wastewater pipeline locates.

It doesn't take a pipe breach to smell the sewage in the S.A. River.
