By Sarah Snyder - Contributing Writer/Northwest Weekly

Leon Springs will host its first Family Greenfest on Saturday, featuring a variety of green companies and non-profits to show residents lead greener lives.

"With all of the growth and development out here, we have a lot of families in Leon Springs and we don't have a thing for them to gravitate to," said Mario Obledo, a Leon Springs resident who spearheaded the event.

The admission-free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p,m. at Leon Springs Baptist Church, 24133 Boerne Stage Road. The festival, combined with the Leon Springs Farmer's Market, will feature live music and food and 55 vendors related to farm-to-table dining, home energy savings, clean air, protecting the environment, and sustainability.

"One gentleman makes biodiesel out of cottonseed oil and restaurant grease," Obledo said.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the Leon Springs Business Association. The Leon SpringsGreenfest Planning Committee (LSGFPC), the organization that is hosting the event, was established to respond to increasing development in the area.
