BRUSSELS — European Union governments are calling for a global ban on fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna at next week's international talks on protecting endangered species.

Overfishing and surging demand has caused bluefin tuna stocks in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean to shrink 60 percent from 1997 to 2007.

The EU's 27 nations also agreed Wednesday to push for elephants and polar bears to be added to a global list of endangered species at a March 13-27 meeting in Doha, Qatar, of the 175 countries that are part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
